Kurt Angle returns to in-ring action at WWE TLC

The Shield reunion might be on hold, but that doesn’t mean Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins are going to war alone. With Roman Reigns unable to join his fellow Hounds of Justice at WWE TLC, WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle is competing in a WWE ring for the first time in over 11 years to help the Raw Tag Team Champions wage war against the overwhelming team of Braun Strowman, Intercontinental Champion The Miz, Kane, Cesaro & Sheamus in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match.

The Olympic Hero’s return to the ring comes at perhaps the most unexpected, yet exciting, point in recent WWE history. The Shield had just reunited in earnest after weeks of prodding at the hands of Intercontinental Champion The Miz, who had needled Reigns over the fact that his brothers in black couldn’t hang in today’s WWE. The A-Lister found himself proven wrong in short order, as Reigns, Rollins and Ambrose got the band back together to brutalize both Miz and Cesaro & Sheamus, who had recently battled over Team Red’s tag titles with The Kingslayer and The Lunatic Fringe.

Ambrose’s over-enthusiastic declaration that The Shield could take on up to five competitors and still win came back to haunt him — twice. First, when Miz pressured Angle, acting in his capacity as Raw General Manager, to add Braun Strowman (a recent Reigns rival) to his squad, and second, when Ambrose reiterated his claims and Strowman defeated Reigns in a Steel Cage Match to add a fifth man to their team, which turned out to be a returning Kane.

Unfortunately, with the stage set for an epic 5-on-3 collision, unforeseen circumstances forced Reigns to the sidelines. But now, Angle, who has dealt with Miz’s animosity for months on end, will spell the former WWE Champion and has a chance to show the Intercontinental Champion that his time hasn’t passed by.

Roman has been removed from the match due to illness. We wish him a speedy recovery.

WWE.com added a new feature in which they rank The Shields top 10 matches (to date) – Will their TLC match this Sunday come in and claim the top spot? Or is it hard to beat. Top 3 below, and you can read the full Top 10 on WWE.com HERE.

3. The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family — Elimination Chamber 2014
The very idea of this match caused “This is Awesome” overload among the WWE Universe. So, you can imagine what happened when the bell finally rang on this dream match, which was so heated that the squared circle couldn’t even contain it.

Literally. As the match reached its fever pitch, Dean Ambrose and Bray Wyatt brawled into the crowd, where The Lunatic Fringe was removed from the equation, and Erick Rowan and Luke Harper overpowered Seth Rollins and ruthlessly hurled him through a table. Left by his lonesome, Roman Reigns fought valiantly and even looked poised to win the bout singlehandedly until the numbers game proved too much for him. Although The Shield suffered defeat that night, the bout was further proof that The Hounds of Justice were warriors until the end. And it was, indeed, awesome.

2. The Shield vs. Ryback & Team Hell No (Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match) — WWE TLC 2012
Facing an all-star team of then-WWE Tag Team Champions Team Hell No & the musclebound Ryback in WWE’s first-ever Six-Man Tag Team Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match, The Hounds of Justice made no bones about the fact that they would make the WWE Universe believe in The Shield. And sure enough, the bout featured more than 20 breathless minutes of back-and-forth action, including a Roman Reigns Spear that drove Kane through the barricade and, of course, Seth Rollins’ incredible plunge off a towering ladder.

As most of the combatants were incapacitated, Dean Ambrose and Reigns hurled Bryan through a table in the ring with a vicious powerbomb, allowing Reigns to roll him up for the win. The Shield went on to employ superior tactics and more seamless teamwork on grander stages, but for pure physicality, mayhem and blatant disregard for personal safety, this spectacular slobberknocker is hard to top.

1. The Shield vs. Evolution — Extreme Rules, May 4, 2014
The moment everyone will remember from The Shield’s gonzo brawl with Evolution from Extreme Rules 2014 is Seth Rollins flinging himself from a balcony onto Randy Orton, Triple H and even his own teammate Dean Ambrose like some mad daredevil who was never told that ECW closed 13 years earlier. But this whole brutal affair is worth revisiting.

Unexpectedly chaotic — despite it being Extreme Rules, it wasn’t exactly advertised that the laws of this one were going to be lax — the bout found four of the six competitors fist-fighting through the IZOD Center’s masses like barroom gladiators. The Hounds of Justice took the win after Roman Reigns speared Batista out of his limited-edition Air Jordans, but the message here was more important than the mayhem. This wasn’t just a scrap; it was proof that The Shield could be lovable antiheroes — like three Han Solos in combat boots. They would soon crumble, but reinvention like that is what kept Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns going as the most captivating set in sports-entertainment

Last week The Shield reunited, this week the men in black returned. A blast from the past as the old ‘Sierra. Hotel..’ rang out around the arena at the start of RAW, interrupting Kurt Angle. The trio of hounds emerging at the top of the stairs decked out in their black tactical gear and ready – as always – for war. They stalk down to the ring and dismiss Kurt Angle, then Dean goes on to state that The Miz has made a grave mistake, reuniting the masters of in ring warfare. Nobody does it better than them, and they don’t care how many people Miz gets on to his team, they’ll run through all of them. A challenge Miz accepts, launching a plan to get a 5th member on to his team!

All Braun Strowman has to do is defeat Roman inside a steel cage.

That aside, Dean and Seth march into another battle with Sheamus and Cesaro for the Tag team Championships, a match as high adrenaline as theirs always are. Dean and Seth are successful in retaining their titles, but that momentum is stopped in its tracks as the main event spirals out of control. The Miz locking Seth and Dean out of the arena as they intercept Cesaro and Sheamus, a surprise return from Kane – seemingly after Romans blood in return for his retiring The Undertaker – sees Roman defeated by Strowman. Miz gets his 5th man at TLC. But The Shield have faced down greater odds before. Here’s what WWE.com had to say!

The Shield may have formalized their reunion last week with their trademark fist bump, but for the first time in three years, Raw opened with the crackle of “Sierra, Hotel, India… ” and the sight of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns donning black and marching through the audience to surround someone in the ring — in this case, Raw General Manager Kurt Angle, who quickly turned over the mic and made his exit.

It was awesome (as the WWE Universe chanted), and if there were any concerns that The Hounds of Justice had lost a step, they immediately launched into a scorched-earth proclamation to pick up right where they left off at WWE TLC. And even though Ambrose’s tough talk inadvertently got Braun Strowman added to the upcoming TLC Match last week, The Lunatic Fringe only doubled down on his resolve — he reiterated that The Shield could take on any number of opponents and challenged their TLC foes to throw down on the spot.

The Miz, Braun Strowman and The Bar came to the stage to oblige, but Angle got between the two squadrons, reminding them that The Bar would challenge Ambrose & Rollins for the Raw Tag Team Titles and Strowman would battle The Big Dog in a Steel Cage Match tonight. It was enough to stop the fists from flying, but there’ll be no such restraint on anyone’s part come Sunday.

Raw Tag Team Champions Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins def. Cesaro & Sheamus
Perhaps it was the thrill of being back in black, but Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins were even more rabid than usual in a successful retention of the Raw Tag Team Titles against Cesaro & Sheamus, whose opportunity had only been sanctioned hours earlier.

After getting taken out early, The Lunatic Fringe re-entered the match like a house on fire in relief of Rollins, who had been neutralized for a stretch. The Bar upped the ante with Ambrose running rampant, mixing both smarts (Cesaro wisely avoided another slingshot into the ropes) and power (Sheamus hoisted Ambrose up for a Cesaro springboard uppercut). But Rollins provided the final boost for his brother, rushing the match and instigating a brawl that The Lunatic Fringe closed out with Dirty Deeds to The King of Swing for the victory.

Raw General Manager Kurt Angle banned The Miz, The Bar and The Shield from ringside to prevent outside interference and preserve the integrity of Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman in a Steel Cage, a match that would determine the complexion of the big TLC Match on Sunday. But he didn’t say anything about inside interference, and now Strowman’s victory expands The Shield’s opponents from four to five as a result.

To be fair, the rival teams ignored Angle’s initial decree as well, rushing the cage despite the General Manager’s orders. The Miz’s crew struck first, with The Bar cutting Roman off at the pass when he tried to escape the cage after momentarily felling Strowman. The Shield quickly neutralized the interference, but The Monster Among Men hauled Reigns over the cage right into a superplex, and when the brawl between The Shield and The Bar continued into the parking lot, Miz himself locked them out of the arena by closing the door of the loading dock.

Reigns managed to fight his way back into contention by hitting Strowman with three Superman Punches and a Spear, but the tide quickly turned when the arena plunged into red light and Kane rose from beneath the ring to administer two bone-rattling chokeslams to the former WWE Champion. Strowman followed up with a Running Powerslam, The Big Red Monster piled on with a Tombstone, and a second Running Powerslam from The Gift of Destruction earned the decisive pinfall and expanded his squadron by one for Sunday in the process. And, as Miz informed the WWE Universe, in case that wasn’t enough of a hint, The Devil’s Favorite Demon was, indeed, his final teammate for WWE TLC.

Dean Ambrose said The Shield could take on five opponents and win. The Hounds of Justice are about to be put to that exact test.

A night for the History books and Indianapolis continued to be a milestone town for The Shield. We’ve seen debuts, breakups, and now we get to see the three most dangerous men in WWE reunite in the very same ring. In response to relentless attacks and verbal goading by The Miz, Cesaro and Sheamus (why would anybody do that?) Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins emerge united to crash the ‘Mizzie’ awards. Circling the ring and ripping their targets apart, sending them scattering for the hills. The Hounds round up The Miz however, and subject him to a Triple Power Bomb – now apparently named The Shield Bomb according to Michael Cole. Fists meet in the center of the ring, new T Shirts and all, The Shield is back.

But that wasn’t the only mark they made on the night. Confronting Braun Strowman as he attempted to rough up Matt Hardy, Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns took down the monster and sent him crashing through the announce desk with another power bomb. Goodnight, not-so-sweet prince.

Later on, Charly Caruso confronted Dean and his cohorts and got a swift rundown of what they plan to do now they’re back together. It’s a pretty brief plan: Run the place, and cut through everybody and everything that stands in their way. Mission set. The Miz, however, is not done with his scheming just yet. As a match is set for TLC, a Tables, Ladders & Chairs match. The Shield vs The Miz, Cesaro, Sheamus… and Braun Strowman! A handicap for their first match back? Bring it on. Here’s what WWE.com had to say!

INDIANAPOLIS — They’re Bravo-Alpha-Charlie-Kilo. Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns didn’t just reunite in earnest for the first time in three years to crash “Miz TV,” they showed they haven’t lost a step, despite the lengthy layoff.

While The Miz, Cesaro, Sheamus and Curtis Axel (Bo Dallas was recuperating) crowed over beating the brothers-in-arms down last week (The Bar and Axel received Mizzies for their assistance), The Hounds of Justice showed that Miz might have been off the mark when he insisted their time had passed them by. In fact, the three former WWE Champions responded to The A-Lister’s boasts by circling the ring and administering a beatdown straight out of The Shield’s greatest hits, laying out all four Superstars and sealing the reunion with a ring-shaking Triple Powerbomb to The Awesome One and a fist-bump over his prone body.

And, as it turns out, The Miz might have gotten even more than he bargained for, as Raw General Manager Kurt Angle decided to give the Intercontinental Champion the spotlight he craved by placing him and The Bar in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match against The Shield at WWE TLC. As Much as Miz seemed as though he couldn’t believe it, The Olympic Hero assured him: It’s true.

Hardy turned in a gritty, turn-back-the-clock effort against Strowman that saw him land a Twist of Fate, only Strowman to kick out at one, retorting with two chokeslams and a Running Powerslam for the win. After the match, Strowman looked primed to put Hardy through the LED screen a la Curt Hawkins, but he was quickly interrupted by The Hounds of Justice, who met him on the stage, overwhelmed the monster and plunged him through the announce table with an incredible Triple Powerbomb

But The Gift of Destruction’s fate will remain entwined with The Shield’s for the foreseeable future. Not only did Kurt Angle sanction Strowman vs. Reigns in a Steel Cage next week, but Ambrose’s offhanded remark that The Shield could take out four or five opponents at once were noted by The Miz, who recruited The Monster Among Men to be that very same fourth man at WWE TLC.

The Shield has returned! Much to the elation of the WWE Universe, Roman Reigns has reunited with Raw Tag Team Champions Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins to wage war against the overwhelming quartet of Braun Strowman, Intercontinental Champion The Miz, Cesaro & Sheamus in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match at WWE TLC.

Though Reigns’ insisted he was on a different path from his former Shield brethren, the rumors began to run wild as to whether the fans were destined to see The Hounds of Justice together again, especially after Ambrose and Rollins put their turbulent history aside and captured the Raw Tag Team Titles from Sheamus and Cesaro.

While The Lunatic Fringe and The Kingslayer were busy duking it out with The Swiss Cyborg and The Celtic Warrior over the illustrious tag titles, The Miz was poking a stick at The Big Dog in his unrelenting search for respect. Eventually, “The Bar” aligned with The A-Lister to execute a brutal 3-on-1 beatdown on Reigns. The trio even tempted fate when they culminated their attack with a Shield-signature Triple Powerbomb and mocked the brothers-in-arms by putting their fists together a la The Hounds of Justice.

However, the ridicule turned serious in a hurry when the reunited Reigns, Ambrose and Rollins interrupted “Miz TV” one week later and unleashed a major counter-offensive of their own.

In the wake of the chaos, Raw General Manager Kurt Angle made the Six-Man Tag Team Match, and we are off to the races. However, when Miz pointed out Ambrose’s earlier boast that The Shield could take on four or five guys, Angle agreed to let The A-Lister try to secure a fourth member for his team. Instead of a man, though, the fourth combatant turned out to be a Monster Among Men, Braun Strowman.

A longstanding adversary to Reigns, Strowman also recently defeated Ambrose and Rollins, respectively. The massive Superstar literally tips the scales in favor of Miz, Cesaro and Sheamus in a big bad way. Together, the nearly insurmountable combination may prove cataphoric to the reunification of The Shield.

Don’t miss a moment of the action at WWE TLC, Sunday, Oct. 22, at 8 ET/5 PT, streaming live on the award-winning WWE Network.
